Q: Can non-alcoholic beer get you drunk?

A: In normal drinking, it’s extremely unlikely. Many NA beers sit under 0.5% ABV, while some are truly 0.0%. Even at 0.5%, you’d need a huge, rapid intake to match the alcohol in one regular beer. Still, “unlikely” is not the same as impossible, so check labels and be honest about your own situation, especially if you’re in recovery or avoiding alcohol for medical reasons.

Q: Is non-alcoholic beer completely alcohol-free?

A: Not always. In the U.S., “non-alcoholic” usually means under 0.5% ABV. “Alcohol-free” or “0.0” means no detectable alcohol. The UK and parts of Europe use tighter cutoffs for “alcohol-free,” often 0.05% ABV or lower, while some EU rules still allow “alcohol-free” up to 0.5%. That’s why reading the can matters.

Q: Does non-alcoholic beer have fewer calories than regular beer?

A: Often, yes — but not always. Alcohol carries calories, so taking it out usually lowers the number. However, some NA styles keep more unfermented sugars and residual wort character, which can push calories back up. If calories matter, check the nutrition label instead of assuming. For the best low-carb non-alcoholic beer options, look for explicitly labeled “lite” or “low-calorie” picks like Athletic Lite.

Q: Does non-alcoholic beer taste like regular beer?

A: It can. Brewing has improved a lot, especially for hop-forward styles that hide small gaps. Lagers and pilsner styles are harder because they are subtle, so flaws show faster. Go in with realistic expectations, and you will find plenty that tastes like beer, not a workaround.

Q: Is non-alcoholic beer safe for pregnant people?

A: Many pregnant people choose 0.0% beers to stay on the safe side, while others avoid anything labeled “beer” altogether. Because non-alcoholic typically means “very low” and not always “zero,” the safest move is to talk to a healthcare provider and choose truly alcohol-free options if you get the green light.

Q: Is non-alcoholic beer a good choice for people with diabetes?

A: Some NA beers can be a better fit than full-strength options, especially lower-calorie and lower-carb picks. But they still contain carbohydrates and sometimes added sugars. Anyone managing diabetes should check nutrition labels closely and talk with their healthcare team about how NA beer fits into their plan.

Q: Is there a best gluten-free non-alcoholic beer?

A: Gluten-free and gluten-reduced non-alcoholic beers are still a niche within a niche, but more breweries are experimenting with them. If gluten is a concern, look for beers brewed with naturally gluten-free grains or explicitly labeled gluten-free, and double-check the brewery’s FAQ before you commit. Our recommendation? Golden by Kit NA Brewing in Portland, Maine is a terrific gluten-removed witbier.
